What is a Geographical Indication (GI) Tag?
A Geographical Indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. Examples include Darjeeling Tea, Kanchipuram Silk, and Alphonso Mango.
It certifies that the product possesses certain qualities, is made according to traditional methods, or enjoys a certain reputation, due to its geographical origin.

Who Can Apply?
A GI application cannot be filed by a single individual. It must be filed by:
- An association of persons or producers.
- Any organization or authority established by or under any law.
The applicant must represent the interest of the producers of the concerned goods.
Documents Required
The following documents and information are required for GI registration:
- Statement of Case: Describing how the goods originated and the unique characteristics.
- Map: A map of the territory/region/locality.
- Description of Goods: Details of the product, including its unique qualities.
- Proof of Origin: Historical evidence proving the origin of the product.
- Method of Production: Details of the production process, including human skills involved.
- Logo/Sign: Three copies of the GI logo or sign (if any).
- Details of Applicants: Name, address, and legal status of the association.
Registration Process
- Filing Application: Submit the application in the prescribed form (GI-1) to the GI Registry in Chennai.
- Preliminary Scrutiny: The Registrar checks for deficiencies. If any, they must be rectified within one month.
- Examination: A Consultative Group of experts examines the application to verify the claims.
- Publication: If accepted, the application is published in the GI Journal.
- Opposition: Any person can oppose the registration within 3-4 months of publication.
- Registration: If no opposition is filed (or if decided in favor of the applicant), the GI is registered, and a certificate is issued.
Government Fees
The government fee for filing a GI application is approximately ₹5,000. Additional fees apply for renewal, adding authorized users, and other procedural steps.
The registration is valid for 10 years and can be renewed indefinitely for further periods of 10 years.
