What is FSSAI License Renewal?
An FSSAI License is issued for a validity period of 1 to 5 years, as chosen by the Food Business Operator (FBO). To continue operations legally, the license must be renewed before it expires.
The renewal window opens 120 days before the expiry date. It is mandatory for all types of FSSAI registrations:
- Basic Registration: For turnover < ₹12 Lakhs.
- State License: For turnover ₹12 Lakhs - ₹20 Crores.
- Central License: For turnover > ₹20 Crores or importers/exporters.
Why is Renewal Crucial?
- Legal Compliance: Operating with an expired license is a punishable offense under the FSS Act, 2006.
- Avoid Penalties: Late renewal attracts a penalty of ₹100 per day.
- Business Continuity: Expired licenses can lead to business closure notices and disruption of supply chains (e.g., delisting from Zomato/Swiggy).
- Brand Reputation: A valid license builds trust with customers and authorities.

Fees and Penalties
The renewal fee is generally the same as the new license fee. However, timing is key:
- 120 to 30 Days before Expiry: Standard Renewal Fee.
- Last 30 Days before Expiry: Standard Fee + Late Fee (₹100 per day).
- After Expiry (up to 180 days): You can still renew but with heavy penalties.
- After 180 days of Expiry: The license is cancelled. You must apply for a New License.
Consequences of Non-Renewal
If you fail to renew your license:
- Illegal Operation: Continuing business is illegal and can attract fines up to ₹5 Lakhs or imprisonment.
- Business Shutdown: Food Safety Officers can seal your premises.
- Loss of Platform Access: Online aggregators (Zomato, Swiggy, Amazon) will delist your business.
