What is CE Certification?
CE (Conformité Européenne) Marking is a mandatory conformity mark for products sold within the European Economic Area (EEA). It signifies that the product meets high safety, health, and environmental protection requirements.
For Indian exporters, affixing the CE mark is the "passport" to trade freely in the 27 EU member states, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.

Certification Process
- Identify Directives: Determine which EU Directives apply to your product (e.g., Machinery Directive, MDR).
- Check Standards: Identify the Harmonized European Standards (EN Standards) applicable.
- Conformity Assessment: Determine if you can self-declare or need a Notified Body (third-party assessment).
- Product Testing: Test the product in an accredited lab to ensure it meets standards.
- Technical File: Compile the Technical Documentation.
- Declaration of Conformity (DoC): Draft and sign the EU Declaration of Conformity.
- Affix CE Mark: Place the CE mark on the product or packaging.
Technical File Requirements
The Technical File is crucial and must be kept for 10 years. It typically includes:
- Product description and design drawings.
- List of applied standards and directives.
- Risk assessment and management report.
- Test reports and certificates.
- User manuals and instructions.
- Declaration of Conformity.
Fees & Costs
Costs vary based on the product's risk category:
- Self-Declaration (Low Risk): Approx. ₹50,000 - ₹1.5 Lakhs (includes testing and documentation).
- Notified Body (High Risk): ₹2 Lakhs - ₹8 Lakhs+ (includes third-party audits and certification).
Note: Costs depend on product complexity and testing requirements.
Validity of CE Certification
CE Marking generally does not have a fixed expiry date. It remains valid as long as:
- The product design remains unchanged.
- The applicable EU directives and standards do not change.
However, certificates issued by a Notified Body (e.g., for medical devices) typically have a validity of 3-5 years and require surveillance audits.
